How to Reset Your Windows 10 Forgotten Password

We’ve all been there at some point when we open our laptop to be greeted by the login screen when we realize that we can’t remember the password. This can be the most terrifying moment. After hours of trying different password combinations on your Windows 10 laptop and scrambling your head, you still can’t find that correct password. What can be done now?

Oh No Meme

Luckily, Windows 10 comes with a nifty feature that allows users to reset their password and set a new one. In this article, we’ll show you the three different methods of resetting your Windows 10 password and regaining access to your computer.

As you’d know, there are two ways to log into Windows 10. The first way is “via a Microsoft account” and the second is via a “local account”. In this article, we’ll show you the different methods for resetting either your Microsoft account password or the local account password.

How to Reset Your Windows 10 Microsoft Account Password

Step 1: At the Windows 10 login screen, click on the I Forgot My Password option.

  • Note: If you can’t find this option or don’t have access to your laptop, then you can reset directly from Microsoft’s password reset webpage. Make sure to choose the ‘I forgot my password’ option there.

Step 2: Next, you’ll be asked to enter your Microsoft email account. Enter the email of the Microsoft account which you were using to log into your computer and click Next.

Step 4: Now, you will see options to verify your identity. There are three choices: Call, Text, and Email. Choose the one that you like and click Next to receive the verification code.

Step 5: Based on the option you selected in the last step, you’ll receive the verification code either on your email or phone. Find the code and enter it in the field where it asks for the verification code, then click Next.

Step 6: Now you’ll be asked to reset your password. Type a new password that is strong and easy to remember, then click Submit/Next.

Step 7: You’ll now get redirected back to your Windows 10 login screen. Enter the new password and enjoy using your laptop once again. Yay!

If you are not able to use your laptop, then you can also reset the password with other devices, such as your phone or another computer.

How to Reset Your Local Account Password in Windows 10

Let’s find out how to reset the Windows 10 password for a local account.

Step 1: Open your laptop and attempt to enter the password. When the password is wrong, you will see an option to reset the password. Click on this option.

Step 2: Next, you’ll see a window that asks for the answers to your security questions. Answer all the security questions correctly and submit. (Answers must be correct, else you will not be able to reset the password.)

Step 3: You can now reset your password by creating and submitting a new password that you can easily remember.

Step 4: Login with the new password in your laptop and enjoy.

How to Reset Windows 10 Password using a Reset Disk (For local account)

This is an alternative method for resetting your local account password in Windows 10. It uses a reset disk which is a file created on your USB or SD card which allows you to reset your password when plugged into your computer.

Here I am assuming that you have already created a password reset disk on a USB drive or SD card, otherwise, this method cannot be used.

Step 1: Insert the password reset disk into your laptop.

Step 2: Start your laptop. Now the system will show you ‘reset password option’, click on this.

Step 3:  On the next window, you’ll see a drop-down menu. From the menu, choose the path where the reset disk is located.

Step 3: Select the reset disk and click next.

Step 4: Your old password is reset and now you’ll be asked to create a new password that is both strong and easy to remember.

Step 5: Click on finish, then restart the laptop. You can now sign in with the new password and begin using your laptop.

These are the various methods of resetting your password in Windows 10, depending on whether you’re signing in via a Microsoft account or a Local Account. If you’ve managed to reset the password and gain access to your laptop, then I highly recommend that you create a password reset disk which makes it very easy for users to reset their Windows 10 password whenever they forget it.
